The Story Behind the Sombrero Vueltiao
The Sombrero Vueltiao was first created by the Indigenous Zenú people of Colombia over centuries ago as protection from the intense Caribbean sun while working in the corn fields. Over time, it became much more than a hat — it evolved into one of Colombia's most important cultural symbols and a representation of Zenú craftsmanship and identity.
Handmade in Tuchín, Colombia
Every authentic Sombrero Vueltiao is handwoven in Tuchín, Córdoba — the heart of the Zenú artisan community. Each hat is crafted from caña flecha, a native natural fiber harvested, dyed, braided, and woven entirely by hand using ancestral techniques passed down through generations.
More Than a Hat
At Best of Colombia, our mission is to preserve authentic Colombian craftsmanship while creating meaningful impact for the communities behind every piece.
We work with over 40 artisan families in Tuchín, and 5–10% of our profits go directly toward school supplies for children in the local artisan community.

FAQ
what does a Lap mean? and how to choose the right one?
what does a Lap mean? and how to choose the right one?
The word vueltas (laps) refers to the number of fiber strands woven into the braid that forms the hat — the higher the number, the finer the weave and the more skilled the artisan.
A 15 or 17-lap Sombrero Vueltiao is the everyday quality: sturdy, breathable, and quicker to make. A 19-lap offers a finer weave with softer feel and tighter detail. A 21-lap is considered fine quality — flexible, lightweight, and highly refined. A 23-lap is the highest grade: ultra-fine, silky to the touch, foldable without damage, and can take an artisan months to complete. It's the true collector's piece.

Measuring for Your Head Size
- Arm yourself with a tape measure, or if not available, a piece of string which you can measure afterward.
- Place it about 1 cm (1/8") above your ears and eyebrows. Do not tighten it too much, as the hat might fit just as tightly.
- If your measurement falls between two sizes, opt for the larger size. A final adjustment will be possible thanks to the reducers supplied with our hats.
- And there you go!
